The Bas Serre Syrahs

vigne, terroir cailloux, syrah, Organic Chateauneuf-du-Pape Domaine l'Or de Line

It's a small 24 ares plot of Syrah planted on a very stony clay-calcareous ground. It's a quite permeable ground, whose dry type character is moderated by the humidity brought by the quite close presence of an branch of the Rhône.

Originally, it was a plot of white Terret but, this grape variety didn't give me enough satisfaction, I overgrafted it with syrah. This technique, who demands a lot of work, enables to take advantage of already existing important roots to obtain, from the second year a quality of old vine.

It is situated in border of the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On the right picture, we see the path which is used as a limit to the appellation. To the left, we have a large plot, planted half syrah and half grenaches. It produces Châteauneuf-du-Pape. To the right, we have our plot of syrah which produces some local wine of Vaucluse. This plot of land, as all the others of the domain is hand harvested. Of course, because of the proximity of the appellation, the type of ground, and our working habits, the wine which is produced is quite exceptional for a Vin de Pays !

It is in this plot as well as in its neighbor that I made some trials linked to the sustainable development: to protect the new plantations of the greediness of rabbits, we are obliged to install nets which surround the young plantations. Until now, these nets were plastic made. It meanns a non biodegradable material. Under the supervision of our Organic specialists of the Chamber of Agriculure, I thus tried strengthened paper muffs. The future will say if they resist to the Mistral and the the rain and how long.

The grapes of this plot serve me to make  Vin de Pays de Vaucluse rosé.
